The clothes we wear are cleaned constantly but people often forget the carpets they walk on and the soft furniture on which they sit also need cleaning.

Mark Suttle, who has had 17 years' experience in the carpet and upholstery cleaning industry, believes professional attention and treatment at least once a year keeps everything fresh.

``After all, when our clothes are dirty we wash them and the same care should be given to soft furnishings and carpets," he said.

``People sometimes walk on carpets with dirty shoes or smear greasy marks on the sofa but to keep them looking good through all that and prolong their life, professional cleaning is the way to go.

``Carpets and upholstery will benefit from a really good clean at least once a year and not just a vacuum but a good deep clean.

``Everything is deodorised and sanitised as part of the treatment and most people comment on the lovely fresh smell."

His partner Tracie Bird established Ryan's Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning about eight years ago and the business has expanded to include an additional two trucks and crews - one based at Farmborough Heights and working in the Illawarra area and another based at Kiama servicing the southern regions.

Clients have the choice of steam or dry cleaning with most upholstery being dry within two hours and carpets within four hours, depending on the methods used.

The company has also branched into restoration work for carpets and upholstery damaged by smoke or water.
